Big “O” Tree and Lawn service has the experience to determine the most efficient and safest way to complete your removal.

Crown Cleaning
Crown cleaning involves cuts in the tree to improve future problem limbs. This type of pruning also improves the overall aesthetic quality of the tree. The before/after difference can be subtle or very noticeable depending on the amount of dead branches presently in the tree. The amount of dead branches presently in the tree.

Thinning and Structural Pruning This type of pruning is a preventative health care type of pruning. Limbs in the outer canopy (and sometimes the inner canopy) are selectively thinned to give the strongest branches room to grow. This reduces the amount of future dead branches from self thinning. Thinning also allows more sunlight to reach the ground, increases air circulation within the tree (reducing the risk of fungal infection), and decreases the risk of blow-over damage. Structural pruning targets future problem branches and removes them. This creates a more structurally sound tree that is less likely to fail. Structural pruning is best done when the tree is small but can also be done to older trees.

Cabling / Bracing This most often occurs when two or more major attachment points of major tree trunks need additional support, when two or more major trunks are competing for dominance. We install traditional dead end steel cables as well as the more “tree-friendly” Cobra cabling systems.
Injections / Plant Health Care There are a lot of techniques and methods of dealing with insect and disease problems in trees. It takes knowledge and experience to know when and with what to treat specific problems. Big “O” Tree and Lawn Service has the know-how to keep your plants looking their best.

Pruning views involves removing branches in the interior portion or upper portion of a tree to “pull-back the curtain” –so to speak – and reveal a view of mountains, valleys, rivers, or anything else might be there. We have done countless view cuts at Wintergreen and other places.

Salvage / Restoration Pruning
Salvage pruning can be for trees that have been damaged in storms or trees that have been topped. This is a type of pruning with the long term goal of improving the structure of the tree, decreasing maintenance, and keeping it healthy for as long as possible.

Topping trees is a practice that has been around for a long time. Some people think, “Hey, if I top my trees I can reduce their height as well as making them more bushy looking. There are many companies out there that will gladly top your trees and take your money.
Here at Big “O” we do NOT top trees. Topping initially looks horrible. You are left with almost no foliage; just large branches that have been cut off in the middle. Most healthy deciduous trees will vigorously sprout back the next spring. The tree will send up these sprouts in dense clusters and in a few short years the tree will be back to it’s original height from the fast growing sprouts. However these sprouts have a much weaker attachment to the trunk than branches that developed with the tree.
Therefore, you end up with more maintenance as these weak sprouts fall out in ice storms, windstorms, etc… Almost without exception the ends of topped branches and leads will die back because they are not being supplied with the energy needed to survive. This not only creates a maintenance hazard as these areas decay and fall out of the tree but also a great entrance point for disease and insects.
If shorter bushy trees are what you are after our professionals can help you pick out a new species that is suited more for the aesthetic quality and environment in which you want it to grow.
