History
Big “O” Tree & Lawn Service Inc., was founded in 1979 by Orvin H. Kiser, Jr. as the result of a freak October snowstorm. In 1987 the lawn care division was added. Through education, we continue to learn better ways to care for landscape plants. Our plant health care (PHC) program continues to provide our clients with healthy lawns and landscapes. Big “O” Tree & Lawn Service, Inc. strives to provide plant health care to its customers at a level of service and professionalism that is second to none. We employ professionals with industry experience including: certified arborists, certified pesticide applicators, registered pesticide technicians, college graduates, experienced professionals, and high school graduates. On November 17th, 2005 Big “O” Tree and Lawn Service became only the 2nd Tree Care Company in Virginia to become accredited by TCIA (Tree Care Industry Association) and only the 39th company Nationwide.
I am often asked about how I came up with the name Big “O” Tree and Lawn Service and as with most things in life there is a story to tell. This story begins many years ago when my father fostered a love for baseball in me. He was an avid baseball fan and his enthusiasm inspired me to work hard and to strive to be my best (Thanks Dad). As the years passed my skills improved and I eventually earned a spot as the closing pitcher for the Virginia Tech Hokies baseball team. Go Hokies!! It was there that I earned the nickname Big “O” as a play on my name and my stature. In time I was able to play Minor League ball with the Texas Rangers, Pittsburg Pirates and Toronto Blue Jays. These were good times which required a great deal of time and effort but they eventually came to an end in 1979.
Though I had to give up my dream of playing major league baseball I have been able to continue to enjoy the game in the position of coach and manager of the Stuarts Draft Diamondbacks in the Rockingham County Baseball League. My love for the game has not changed but the pleasure I receive today is in working with and encouraging the next generation of talented, enthusiastic, young players. They help keep me young and while making me greyer, all the effort is worthwhile when I see them grow into quality young men. I hope that I can inspire some of these young guys the way my father inspired me and that they will then pursue their life goals with enthusiasm and passion and strive to be their best.
Over the years we have had some fun with our name. I recall in the beginning when a customer asked me for the name of my company and I was somewhat dumbfounded by the concept of a name. I had to think about the idea for a while and decided on Big “O” because it was my nickname and it could stand for Big Old Tree or Big Oak Tree and if I ever listed the company in the yellow pages it would have an early listing. I thought: “I’m just doing this work for a little while until I can find a real job so anything will do, after all I can always change the name if I keep going”. It is hard to believe that 30 years later this name has become a recognized trademark!
It is enjoyable to look back at the way it all began and realize how far we have come. Today we are recognized as one of the best tree care companies in Virginia but we have not forgotten what principles started this company; those of quality customer service and workmanship. Our goal at Big “O” is to make you so happy with our work, that you will want to tell your friends. If we fall short of this goal, please let us know.
